چکیده

ABSTRACT More than 500 diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have been observed in astronomical spectra, and their signatures correlations different environments studied over the past decades to reveal clues about nature of carriers. We compare equivalent widths DIBs, normalized amount reddening, EB-V, search for anticorrelated DIB pairs using a data sample containing 54 DIBs measured 25 sightlines. This covers most strong commonly detected optical region, sightlines probe variety medium conditions. find that 12.9 per cent are anticorrelated, lowest Pearson correlation coefficient is rnorm ? ?0.7. revisit correlation-based families able reproduce assignments such well-studied by applying hierarchical agglomerative k-means clustering algorithms. visualize dissimilarities between represented 1 ? rnorm, multidimensional scaling (MDS). With this representation, we form rather continuous sequence, which implies some properties carriers changing gradually following sequence. also at least two factors needed properly explain DIBs. While first factor may be interpreted as related ionization carriers, physical interpretation second less clear how interact with surrounding material.

Diffuse interstellar bands in RAVE survey spectra

We have used spectra of hot stars from the RAVE Survey in order to investigate the visibility and properties of five diffuse interstellar bands previously reported in the literature. The RAVE spectroscopic survey for Galactic structure and kinematics records CCD spectra covering the 8400–8800 Å wavelength region at 7500 resolving power. The spectra are obtained with the UK Schmidt at the AAO, e...

Diffuse Interstellar Bands in NGC 1448 ⋆

We present spectroscopic VLT/UVES observations of two emerging supernovae, the Type Ia SN 2001el and the Type II SN 2003hn, in the spiral galaxy NGC 1448. Our high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra display atomic lines of Ca , Na , Ti  and K  in the host galaxy. In the line of sight towards SN 2001el, we also detect over a dozen diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) within NGC 1448....

On correlations between diffuse interstellar bands

One way to better apprehend the problem of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is to search for correlations between the bands in a large sample of spectra towards various lines of sight: a strict correlation may imply that a common carrier is at the origin of the bands, whereas a non-correlation means that different species are involved. We propose this observational test for 10 DIBs collected i...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the diffuse interstellar bands: a survey.

We discuss the proposal relating the origin of some of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) to neutral and ionized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in interstellar clouds. Laboratory spectra of several PAHs, isolated at low temperature in inert gas matrices, are compared with the spectra of five reddened early-type stars selected from an extensive set of astronomical spectra. Fr...

Diffuse Interstellar Bands in single clouds: new families and constraints on the carriers

We present a survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in single clouds. High resolution and high S/N observations of DIBs towards lines of sight representing very different environments allow to investigate mutual correlations in a large consistent sample of DIBs. The classification of DIBs into families is reviewed and refined according to these results. We find that the selected 44 DIBs ar...
